ニュートンはヘルメティストだった！？

ヘルメスが刻んだとされている伝説のエメラルド・タブレット（Emerald Tablet)は、現物がどこにあるのか謎のままですが、その碑文とされるものは中世の錬金術師らによって翻訳され、複数残っています。

その翻訳のうち、アイザック・ニュートンが英語に翻訳したものがとても有名です。

ニュートンによる『エメラルド・タブレット』の英訳（1680年）

1. Tis true without lying, certain & most true.

2. That which is below is like that which is above & that which is above is like that which is below to do the miracles of one only thing.

3. And as all things have been & arose from one by the meditation of one: so all things have their birth from this one thing by adaptation.

4. The Sun is its father, the moon its mother,

5. The wind hath carried it in its belly, the earth its nurse.

6. The father of all perfection in the whole world is here.

7. Its force or power is entire if it be converted into earth.

7a. Separate thou the earth from the fire, the subtle from the gross sweetly with great industry.

8. It ascends from the earth to the heaven & again it descends to the earth and receives the force of things superior & inferior.

9. By this means you shall have the glory of the whole world & thereby all obscurity shall fly from you.

10. Its force is above all force, for it vanquishes every subtle thing & penetrates every solid thing.

11a. So was the world created.

12. From this are & do come admirable adaptations where of the means (or process) is here in this.

13. Hence I am called Hermes Trismegist, having the three parts of the philosophy of the whole world.

14. That which I have said of the operation of the Sun is accomplished & ended.

これを和訳すると、下のような感じになるかと思います。何のことを意味しているのか謎の文がたくさんありますが、この謎性が、中世のヘルメティストたちを魅了したのかもしれませんね。2番の「下なるものは上なるもののごとく、上なるものは下なるもののごとし」がHermetismで最も有名な思想です。

1. これは真実、偽りなしの確かな真実。

2. 唯一なるものの奇蹟は、「下なるものは上なるもののごとく、上なるものは下なるもののごとし」の原理による。

3. 万物は唯一なるものの熟慮（瞑想）によって唯一なるものから生じた。ゆえに万物は適応することによって唯一なるものから生まれた。

4. 太陽はその「父」、月はその「母」。

5. 風はそれを体内に宿し、大地はそれを育てる。

6. 全世界の完璧なる被造物すべての父はここにいる。

7. その力は完全である。もしその力が大地の力に変わるならば。

7a.偉大なる勤勉さで、地から火を、粗雑なものから精妙なものを快く分かつ。

8. それは地から天へ昇り、そしてまた天から地へ降りる。それによって優れたものと劣ったもの、すべての力を身に付ける。

　9.  これによって、汝は宇宙の栄光（神の叡智）を手に入れるだろう。そして、（その叡智によって）すべての不明瞭が消え去るだろう。

10.その力はすべての力を超越する。なぜなら、それはあらゆる精妙で神秘的なものを支配し、あらゆる固体を貫く力だから。

11a.このようにして世界は創造された。

12. この真理を知ることによって、ここに示されている手段（または過程）の驚くべき適応（奇蹟）が生まれる。

13. 我はヘルメス・トリスメギストス。全世界の哲学の三部分をもつゆえに、この名で呼ばれる。

　 14.太陽の働きについての私の説明はこれで完結した。

アイザック・ニュートンがオカルト研究をしていたこと、錬金術師であり、Hermetist (ヘルメティスト）であったことが欧米諸国では知られています。

ニュートンの錬金術書を収集していた経済学者Keynes（ケインズ）は、ニュートンのことを、「 ”the first king of reason”（理性の時代の最初の偉人）ではなく、“the last of the magicians”（最後の魔術師）だ」と書き遺しているのだそうです。
